After many, many years of no trouble, I have a paper jam and can't clear it.
Stupidly, I have mislaid the manual !! :-(
Of course, if I cannot get guidance from any of you, I'll go to HP and then
a local computer shop.
Basically, a second sheet of paper began feeding in, before the first had
finished.
I tried pressing the green button, as a note I had made said this might
clear it. It didn't.
I cannot see any paper that I might be able to pull on gently, and it is not
obvious which parts - cartridges etc. ? - to take out and how.
All ideas welcome.
Thank you.

Have you tried downloading the manual from the HP website?

Panic over, and sorry if any of you had spent any time on this!
Many thinks if you have.
I found the Manual on my computer, as a pdf file, and sorted the problem
out.
> Panic over, and sorry if any of you had spent any time on this!
I am reminded of trouble-shooting primary school inkjet printers that
wouldn't feed paper, which was often due to a drinking straw sitting across
the paper path behind the roller(s).
Solution: invert printer and see what falls out.
Bet that isn't mentioned in any manual!
Not strictly relevant here, but may help someone!

But maybe not an hp 2550 as it weighs /a lot/.

Nor is 'take the keyboard into the shower with you'.
Back to the HP: open every door, remove everthing removable and you will
eventually find the errant paper.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. All of the toner will fall out of the colour
cartridges and stain everything around. I tipped my HP2550 printer on its
side to read a label on the under side and spent the next half an hour
clearing up toner - never mind the fact each colour cartridge costs 40 (or
something like that)...
I hope that was a joke - but there was no smiley!

I did specify inkjets!

I guess it was but it /was/ valuable advice for inkjet users, perhaps.
Bearing in mind that the HP2550 cartridges rotate inside the machine, you
/should/ be able to rotate the whole machine in the same plane (not
sideways). Mine has been lain on its back without a problem. However, it
may be that excess toner has been deposited in the bottom of the machine
which should be thoroughly cleaned out first. But "don't turn laser
printers upside down" should be general advice.

Ink jets have waste ink tanks used every time the head does a cleaning
cycle. Inverting the printer may result in quite a mess inside and maybe
outside the printer.

I had a similar problem with my HP Photosmart C6180. The HP website
gave me a video of how to clear a paper jam and bits of paper which
stop the printer clearing the jam. Give the website a try.

Hello All,
Well, in spite of my "computer thickness", maybe I have a use in quite
often starting threads that attract a variety of interesting suggestions,
etc.
Thank you all, and thank you, Tim, for the above simple suggestion. But that
was my problem. I realised that so many of these plastic machines have bits
that give and bits that break, because the actual design, including use of
plastic is faulty. So I was afraid to move a "givey" bit, in case it broke.
On the matter of tiny plastic bits that break, and which cannot be repaired,
I have exactly that problem. I have a Minolta PagePro from years ago. One
tiny little bit is broken in the freed tray :-( Otherwise the printer is
fine.
Up to when the pad becomes saturated (which happens after a few hundred
head cleaning cycles), and then it will get messy. Believe me, I've got
the t-shirt, or rather I used to have!

Then you take it out and wash it. I've done this several times with my Canon
printers. If you leave it too long then the ink in the region of the waste
discharge tube 'sets' into a solid goo and blocks the tube, so it is worth
the trouble to do it regularly and it's not too messy since, as you say,
it's just a big felt pad.

I had one of those too. After about 15 sets of print heads, the pad
became full. Next time I tipped it, things rapidly became colourful -
actually a muddy grey-brown in the main - and very sticky.
Iy you want a scanning head and (if I can find it) the Twain driver
for it, that's the only bit I've still got.
