Parallel Port For Iyonix

I would very much like to get 'PIC Prog' which is part of Robert
Sprowson's 'PIC Suite' running on my Iyonix. This presently only works
on my old RPC because it uses the parallel printer port to connect the
PIC programming hardware.

Does anyone have available, or know where I can obtain, either a
podule with a parallel printer port or an Iyonix compatible parallel
port PCI card?

I already have a version of 'SerialDev' which includes a PCI parallel
port card driver. The documentation with the driver is probably a bit
out of date and specifies Qtec or Lindy ver3.1 cards with a Sun1889
chipset or Brainbox UC420 3+1 port cards with a BB16PC1958 chipset. I
haven't been able to find any of these, probably because they have
been superseded by newer types and because chipsets aren't always
specified. Of course the PCI card also has to compatible with the
Iyonix's PCI slots.

I'd be grateful for any information.
Thanks,

Leads exist which allow a parallel printer to connect via a USB port, and
Ian Hamilton has software to help set this up.

Would this not work with the PIC programming hardware?

Unfortunately probably not. Robert Sprowson told me that he had tried
producing a USB version of the software but the nature of the use of
the parallel port via USB means that it is limited by the 1kHz USB
system tick and runs too slowly.

No. These leads allow a parallel port printer to be seen by the computer
as USB printer device. They are not a generic USB to parallel port
interface, and do not support bi-directional data.

Have a look at 'Tank's' page -:
talk of a combined serial/parallel PCI card - plus RO5 drivers.

Thanks. I have already downloaded those drivers, but as mentioned in
my original post, I haven't so far been able to identify a compatible
parallel port PCI card to buy. Other makes/types might work but I
would have to buy them to find out.

You could ask him whether he could port it to the GPIO port on a Raspberry
Pi. I don't know the specifics of his programming hardware, but would have
thought it would be reasonably straightforward at the software level. It
might need some voltage conversion depending on the PIC you wanted to
program, though.

An interesting idea. I expect the Beagleboard (Armini that I have) has
the same. I can ask. At present, I understand that 'PIC Prog' needs to
find and use 'Parallel' in 'DeviceFS'.
