Hi,
I have a StrongARM RiscPC600 with a 486SXL PC card installed.
I would like to link it to my other PC via a direct serial link
(I have a 9-pin cable which will connect to the PC). On the PCcard
I have Windows 95 and on the PC I have Windows 98 but I am not sure
how to instigate a data transfer between the two. Could someone help
me? Also my serial cable is damaged, ie the insulation is breached
but none of the wires inside are broken, does anyone know how I could
test it to see if it still works?

Cheers, Rob Simm.

You'll first have to make sure that the configuration in !PC (or
whatever program you use to initiate the PC card on your Acorn) is set
to enable the PC card to access the serial port. Next, load windows up
on both machines, and connect the serial cable to each machine's serial
port. You will now need to load a terminal program on each machine (there
are other special programs which you can buy for direct serial links but
this is the cheapest route). Windows '95 is normally supplied with a
program called "hyper-terminal". You may also have this with Windows'98
(if not, try copying it from your windows '95 machine via a floppy disk).
Look in the hyper-terminal options and set the serial speed to 115200 on
both machines, and the terminal emulation to ANSI. Set the transfer
protocol to "Z-Modem". You should now find that whatever you type into
hyper-terminal appears on the other machine. You can transfer files by
using the transfer options in the program itself.
Hope this helps(!)

Have fun,
From Oliver

My experience of DDC with a "real" PC and an RPC with a 33MhxSX card
indicated that it didn't work at all well. I tried both serial and parallel.
Could get as far as seeing the machines and some files but file transfered
just hung / crashed. The connection was not reliable.

There is a good suite of Acorn/PC <-> Acorn/PC conection program(s) in the
PD that will do ~1Mb/sec (parallel) but they are comand line only. (I've
forgotton the name of the suite but I think It started with "Z").

all the best,
Peter

Thank's for your help guys the serial link works fairly well but not at max
speed (115000bps), It is still quite dodgy but I have managed to transfer a 400k
file without any problems. It is quite temperamental though.

I had no problems at all with this. Fast and error free using a
parallel connection. If one of your OS's is win98 then you have to
configure a different network protocol bu the windows troubleshooter
takes you through this. Email me if you have any problems.
