You should/must dismount the device before unplugging it. I always do it
twice just to be sure.
Not dismounting will give this error.

It was *definitely* dismounted before leaving the Iyonix and on
leaving the RiscPC. However, re-starting the Iyonix, I can now read
it.

It is a problem with SCSIFS on the Iyonix, and happens also with
memory cards from digital cameras etc. It seems to be due to the
Dismount not working correctly.
The easiest thing to do when this occurs (on the Iyonix) is
*rmreinit scsifs
and the card will then be recognised again.

If this is a problem on the Iyonix side then create an Obey file with
the following command in it
*rmreinit scsifs
Double clicking on the obey file after the "ambiguous disc name" error
should let the Iyonix read from the USB stick.

The problem is - and again people have said this is due to not being
dismounted when it has been - the Iyonix can seem to forget the data
on the drive and so open up an empty root directory. Meanwhile the
"used" in the disc menu indicates 100MB or whatever.

No thats a different problem due to the bastardised FAT format used by
XP. Nothing is forgotten, the documented FAT16 standard specifies a
root directory in a cirtain location, XP illegally uses a FAT32 style
root in a different place - but you don't expect Microsoft to follow
their own standards.
