Just a quickie: I've just got a long-defunct 486 PC and a huge
collection of games but have run in to a problem with Alone In The Dark.
Now, the controls are exactly the same as the Acorn version but I just
can't seem to get my character to run.
The manual, and various other resources on the net, say that holding
the up cursor arrow to walk, releasing, and then very quickly
depressing the key will make my character run, but it I can't get it
work.
There's no other problems - the game chugs away at a fine framerate
with sound and music on - so I don't think it's a case of the computer
lagging the controls.
I really need to run to beat those pesky ballroom dancers.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Rob

From memory, I have a feeling it is something to do with playing a
record on the record player in the ballroom, which gets the dancers
out of the way, but I could be wrong.

Just had a go on the Acorn version using Aemulor Pro on my Iyonix, and
the character ran easily enough, you move them across the room holding
down the up arrow as they walk then take your finger off the up arrow
and press it again and hold down and the character should run, it's
all to do with the up arrow key anyway.

Yup, that's it.
The problem is that when walking the characters inevitably get clipped
by one of them as they twirl and it's an instant death.
Funnily enough I tried using the running method as detailed in the
manual for Alone In The Dark 2 and 3 and it works flawlessly every time.
I think I'll have a play and see if I can get DOSbox to run AITD1
faster as it could be that emulation is slowing down the keyboard
interface.
I'm also enjoying Cannon Fodder 2 at the moment too, there's an
interesting website for fans written by one of the level designers
here: http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/cf2/cf2.htm .
Finally, are there any PC games that anyone here can recommend? I'm
catching up on quite a few gems and have found an amazing amount of
games which are officially abandonware.

It's a long time since I've played it, but IIRC you can take the
record off once the dancers have shifted out of the way and they stop
moving.
