Important things missing from the AU review were comments about the
flying model used and how realistic it was or felt. I'd also like to
hear about the world's available to fly in (eg how detailed are they?)
and the kind of missions flown (air superiority? interdiction?
recconaissance?).
Does the author have web/usenet access? Is he willing to post some
answers himself?

Space is limited in the mag as you can probably appreciate. Yes, I did
enjoy writing for the website because it meant I didn't have to limit my
ramblings to a certain number of words ;-)

Well, I'm a games writer so it was reviewed as a game. I don't know of
anyone with flying experience but if someone does come forward, I'm more
than willing to let them do a page or so on how good a simulation it is
of the real thing.

You'll have to wait 'til Rich reads this thread (he wrote the review)
because I haven't played the game what with it arriving before my SA
upgrade.

'fraid not, all the contact details I have are in the box-out in the mag.
Cheers,

My views do not necessarily represent those of my employer
> Having read the damning review of this flight sim in AU this month
I tried not to make it too damning, honest! The author did say it was
probably not the sort of game to interest arcade gamers, it was more of a
simulator, but unfortunately I was writing the review for the games
section...
I think my main complaints are the speed, and the fact that it's almost
exactly the same as the glut of Simis games we had a few years back - it
looks and plays very similar to a Simis flight sim toolkit game, but they
ran quite well on an ARM 2, and this needs an SA233. The use of a higher
resolution shouldn't need a 29x increase in processor speed, not without a
leap in the quality of graphics, models etc. Basically, if you know Mig 29M
Super Fulcrum, you pretty much know this game.

I think I said it appeared fairly realistic, apart from being able to fly
through mountains. I'm not a pilot though, so there's only so much I can
say on the subject - it flew like all the other fairly good flight sims I've
played over the years, and had lots of buttons :)
> I'd also like to hear about the world's available to fly in (eg how

Seems to be one world, different missions. When you say how detailed, do
you mean graphics-wise? I think the screnshots were fairly indicative -
slightly-better-than-pyramid mountains, large expanses of flat green, some
stuff occasionally like runways and lakes. Oh, and you seem to explode
after running away for 150 miles ;)
I did like the landing lights on the run up to landing though, neat touch.
> and the kind of missions flown (air superiority? interdiction?

Yes :)
The problem is, these are much more "realistic" than the Chocks Away "fly a
bit north and blow up bad guys", so there's lots of wandering around trying
to find something - anything. In the short time I had to write the review,
I don't think I even saw any enemy planes. I have a pretty good attention
span, but some other people, um, what was I saying? :)

Not that I know of, as I wasn't able to talk to him prior to publication.
I wouldn't buy this game personally; you, however, seem to be up for
something more realistic, so it might be more your cup of tea - this is not
a bad game, it's just nothing new to me, and not the sort of thing I'm so
eager to revisit that I'd stump up more cash. I'm an absolute Elite nut,
but if someone re-issued ArcElite again (or a clone), with little or no
modifications, for full price, I wouldn't need another copy[1], especially
if you needed a StrongARM 233 to play it on.
Cheers,
Rich.
[1] Well, I already have 2 gold editions, a coverdisc, and a couple of
downloaded versions[2], but you get the point ;)
[2] So that I could upload them elsewhere
