Sorry for the slow response. I don't normally watch the newsgroups.
Pretty much every new game begins with these three commands:
P L T
U L
P R SW
These can be typed while the word "PREPARE" is displayed before the
game gets under way.
I suggest picking on the spiders first. They can be felled with a
single blow of the wooden sword. The snakes are also good value
targets, but be careful because they initially take three hits and
they attack faster than spiders. The standard tactic is this sequence:
A R (Typed while the snake approaches, but don't press [Enter] yet.)
(If you are lucky, the snake will rattle before moving to attack.
If you hear the rattle before it attacks, press Enter and then...)
A R [Enter]
A R [Enter]
M [Enter]
M [Enter]
M [Enter]
T A [Enter]
If the snake doesn't rattle before it attacks, then just [Enter] the
A R command and go straight to the three M commands. Typically, I'll
have "A R_" sitting on the command line with a couple of right-hand
fingers hovering over Enter and my left index finger hovering over M
ready to go as the beastie approaches.
And in this game, keylag is your friend. Veteran players of the
original game would use a variety of tricks to stay ahead of the
keyboard while moving and attacking. As you go deeper into the
dungeon, if at any time the keyboard buffer empties when there is a
beastie in your room, you're dead for sure.
