Hi Chaps,
1. Is there a way of displaying thumbnails on the RISC OS desktop.

2. Is there a way of altering the colour of individual folders?

Dave.

I remember seeing this kind of thing back in RO 3.1 days, but can no
longer recall the details.

Photofiler lets you do this too.

That wasn't a question: the filer in RISC OS 4 and 6 after 4.02 has
thumbnail support built in.

The filer is in RISC OS 4.39 or later has thumbnail support built in.
This has been further improved in RISC OS 6.

However, where photos are concerned I still find it worthwhile using
something else instead (e.g. Thump) due to the OS's lack of thumbnail
caching and the time taken to create them.

Simon,

Image cacheing is configurable from the Filer Configure window in RISC
OS 6.16. I can't remember what version this was introduced in. Have you
experiemented with those settings? Can't say I've particularly needed to,
but they're there if you want to.

However, I still do sometimes want a larger view than I'm prepared to set in
my Filer Thumnail view, so I then use the !ImgViewer in !Boot.Resources, this
is nice and quick for viewing files - it can also convert to other formats.

Cheers
Steve.

The thumbnail cache is flushed when the filer window is closed, so thet
reopening the window causes the images to be thumbnailed, ab initio. Not
very helpful.

It seems to work but here, on large picture files it makes little sense
of the image.

i often wish that there was a way of seeing file TYPE as well as the
thumbnail: i often have JPeg, sprite and JPeg-within-Artworks
versions of the same picture in a folder.

PhotoFiler does that. It has an option to show a tiny file icon in the
corner of each thumbnail.

Thump does that, "use small overlay icons" in thumbnail choices.
