Recently I've been getting an error message printed directly to the
top left of the screen that I can't trace. I thought it might be
Netsurf related as it often becomes apparent during surfing, but I
can't find it in the NS log file. I've also searched all the other
logs on the machine.
The message is 'String is not convertible to integer (Running
foreground process)'. It happens a while after booting the machine,
so I'm fairly sure it is not boot-related. It can be removed by
wiping a window over the area and does not appear to affect running
software. My usual list of applications is StrongEd, Messenger,
Decor, Organiser, Gutenprint, Sunfish, Netsurf (3.0 Dev recent
versions), USBInfo, Netfetch & Geminus. All of these (except the
Netsurf version) is the same as before the rebuild of the disc
structure.
Where do I start in tracking it down? I haven't reported it anywhere
else yet as I don't know if it's Netsurf, something in the ROOL boot,
or a library used by one or more of the applications.

That's quite daring. :) That's still a fairly minimal and not entirely
tested disc image at the moment - the intention being it was enough to get a
Beagle Board off the ground. Basing your Iyonix disc contents on it is an
interesting test - we've not tried that within ROOL yet.
All of which makes me realise I need to add some health warnings to that
download on our web site.
That error message is (partially) in the Kernel but I don't recognise the
foreground process bit of the top of my head - so that doesn't help you
identify the cause, sorry.

The reason for doing this was to sort out the state of my boot
sequence. I had tried out the new USB enhancements and it made my USB
access worse, so I thought a full clear out and reinstall of the hard
disc would clear up the number of patches, updated modules &
applications that have accumulated over many years of RO5 upgrades.
Things do work much better now, and it has been worth it to get the
amazing speed enhancement when accessing a 40GB USB ADFS hard disc
that I use for external backups.
I tried Locate last night to search the hard disc for files containing
'foreground process' but there were no matches, so it must be in the
ROM somewhere as you suggest. It would be nice to find out what is
triggering it though, although it is only cosmetic - there haven't
been any negative effects that I have been able to detect. I didn't
have the issue before the cleanup and have been running 5.14 flashed
since about a month after it was released (initially tested
softloaded).
Thanks for all the excellent work that has been put into RO5 by all at
ROOL.
Grahame.

The error is probably? from within the ROM OS and IIRC many error messages
include tokenised words/partwords.
Even if you know an error is from a disc loaded program you still may not
find it by searching it also may be tokenised and I think I remember in some
programs messages are stored in reverse character order e.g. '01 rorrE' =
'Error 10'
