Thank you, it made me laugh (and wonder how it was done...).

Thanks for the bit of fun.
Fascinated a visiting baby for the duration so worth it just for that!

Great work Steve! Wonderful idea and implementation. Perhaps it can be
expanded as a screen saver on the long distance.
Best Regards
Thomas Milius
The screen-saver ida seems a good one to me, too. I'd have no idea how
to do it, though.
With best wishes,
Peter.

Likewise, thank you for a very engaging visual with a brilliant twist.

Worked fine here with that combination. Ran it twice in fact

Just <shift>double-click on the file icon and LIST the BASIC program.
A very perspicacious bit of BASIC programming, if I may say so.
(perspicacious - is that the right word? I mean easily followable).
Happy New Year!

I mentioned the other day, all I got was a Black screen on this SARPC
running RO 6.20
Just in case one of the number of app I always have running might
interfere, I did a cold reboot, then tried again.
Nothing, totally black screen and nothing else... Left the machine for
about 10 minutes while I had a cuppa, nothing but very black showing.
Took the SnowDemo app to Fay's machine SARPC, but running RO 4.39 and it
worked okay... Nice job.
So I guess it must be something RO 6.20

It ran on my SARPC running 6.20.

Adding to the above...
On the Win PC I have a mirror install of this SARPC running under VRPC-SA
Adjust and like this machine it's running Select RO 6.20
So I ran SnowDemo on that and it worked okay, albeit Fast.
But still resolutely refuses to do anything on this machine.

> But still resolutely refuses to do anything on this machine.
Maybe Viewfinder card is implicated - the demo does read various mode
variables and changes mode.

I've been playing some more.
My old monitor (VisionMaster) Has both BNC and DSub connections, both of
which are connected to this SARPC, so I can switch between Viewfinder and
VIDC.
Switch to VIDC and the SnowDemo works, switching back to VF and it appears
not to work... BUT it is in actual fact working, but the initial screen
draw before the snow starts is very, very slow, coupled with this aged
monitor which needs the brightness screwed up to very the last dribble
before it's just about discernable on the screen.

It does some strange things here with the positioning of the objects
on screen. I get the right-hand tree slightly right of the middle of
the screen (presumably it should appear on the far right) with the
snowman appearing behind its branches. The hat & scarf are placed
midway between the two trees, missing the snowman completely. Iyonix
5.14 (flashed) 1680x1050x16M resolution.

It's possible that your Viewfinder hasn't got a suitable screen mode
defined for it. Looking at the basic !RunImage in !Edit, as you are not
running an Iyonix or Beagleboard it will be a 32K colour 1024x768 screen
mode. I cann't see that the program makes a check for a Viewfinder card.
It works OK here with Viewfinder but I do have a suitable 32K 1024x768
screen mode defined for it. This doesn't rule out an incompatibility with
RO 6.02 as I'm using RO 4.02. Although I've bought later ROS roms and
updates I just cann't be bothered to upgrade!

Guess Y'all missed my last posting of 13:26 so I'll repeat...

With regard to RO 6.20
My base ROM is 4.02 and I've been with the Select scheme since the start,
and upgraded through every version as they've arrived.
There were a few minor glitches moving from Select 4.39 to the first 6.nn
release, but everything seems to be okay now.
I obviously don't remember all the enhancements since 4.02, but I do know
they have been substantial.
A couple that spring to mind...
Some serious enhancement to the filer.
Really useful enhancements to both Paint and Draw.
I believe there are lists of the changes on the RO site.

and as I have already said on two RO6.20 machines here as well

Yes, on mine as well. I am running a 1920x1600 monitor on my Iyonix,
and after the mode change, and the monitor 'auto-adjusting', the left
side of the demo is just to the left of screen middle, and the right
hand tree is off the right of the screen.

Version 1.01 of the demo is on the 7th software site. This addresses some
issues that people may have been having so it might make a difference for
you.
I would suggest people give it a go and see what happens.

There will be a snow-based screen saver coming out soon.
Ta,

Hi Steve,
The only differences I can see in v1.01 is that the trees are black
rather than white, and the moon moves across the sky, starting in the
far right of the screen and gradually appearing in from the left by
the end (maybe the moon moved before as well, but I hadn't noticed
it). Positioning of the trees, snowman and scarf/hat are as they were
before.
Nice snow movement by the way. :)
Grahame.
> There will be a snow-based screen saver coming out soon.
Is that like the one that's on my car windscreen at the moment? :-)
See for yourself:
I've also done a rain-based screensaver.

Should anybody here be interested, I've ported Steve's program to
Windows (using BBC BASIC for Windows, of course):
http://www.rtr.myzen.co.uk/SnowDemo.exe
It needs Windows XP or later (because of the 16bpp sprites) and needs
a fairly fast machine for best results.
Richard.

To reply by email change 'news' to my forename.
Did you write the Snow Demo and Snow screensaver software from
scratch or are they ported from somewhere else?
They are both very realistic. I can imagine much cruder versions
could have been written more easily, but not as satisfying to watch.
It is quite relaxing as a screensaver.
Perhaps a demo or screensaver could be written based on the
'Snowman' theme, you know 'Just walking in the air' and all that.
Thanks,
Dave Lane

Existence = Resistance! Er...., resist Micro$oft.
I wrote SnowDemo from scratch in an afternoon (screensaver was a spin-off).
I was missing writing simple software just for the sake of it and something
with snow in it seemed to be topical.

I'm glad you like it. It was the movement of the snow that took the most
time because I wanted to give the illusion of swirling gusts of wind and
depth.

Oh no - the dreaded feature creep! :)
