Think that's old hat. One old car mailing list I subscribe to is now
moribund - everyone uses a website one. And since it's not kids I'd guess
this is a favourite now.

I still can't see why list and forum cannot be gatewayed to one another
so both bunches can see and reply to all via the medium of their choice.
After all lists and newsgroups are gatewayed and I know a one-way
gateway from Ancestry forums to mailing lists (but they are on the make
as they want people to enjoy the advertising on their web sites).

It is possible. One simply uses a web mail client to access the
mailing list :)
(On a more serious note, some forum/mailing list providers do precisely
as you suggest. Google Groups is one example.)

I have tried twice and get
Message '*** SPAM *** subscribe' rejected. You are not subscribed to
this mailing list.
!MPro, !Hermes which is giving lost connection errors since Aug but
emails are sent to my knowledge. It mighnt have started when I moved

What's almost certainly happening here is that whatever anti-spam
software Paul is using on his server thinks your subscribe message is
spam - and it's set to flag it (rather than delete it) by inserting
"*** SPAM ***" at the start of the subject line.
Pluto - which Paul uses for other mailing lists, and therefore
presumably this one - then gets the message with the subject "***
SPAM *** subscribe" and, because it's not just "subscribe", it thinks
it's a post /to/ the list rather than a subscription request. And,
obviously, because you're actually /trying/ to subscribe, you haven't
subscribed yet, so Pluto rejects it.

You sure its not your extensive blacklisting, based on whether the
user's ISP or upstream provider has; any connection with Phorm, the
Merdock empire, or non belief in crop circles. :-)

I thought it could be that.

Done
Just looked at my headers and notice I was subscribing with the email
address I use in news groups, it is a valid email address could this
be why?
