When I was at primary school, about 12 years ago now, we had an Acorn
computer in one of our classrooms. I can't remember what the model
was, but I believe it was quite current at the time, I certainly
remember playing a Lemmings demo off a coverdisk, which might give you
some idea of the sort of time I'm talking about.
Anyway, there was a program we used to use, educational, I think,
which I'd really like to find, in order to run on an Acorn emulator.
It had something to do with wildlife, I think, but was also kind of
like an adventure game. You'd enter into an area and the screen would
draw out your surroundings. You could then move (I think it was north,
south, east or west) to other areas and you'd get a new picture of
your surroundings.
When it comes to further details my memory fails me. I remember there
being birds and other animals in some of the scenes, and I seem to
remember there was some way of animating the scene - you pressed a
button or something and the birds would start flapping their wings or
move around or something.
I'd possibly remember the title if I heard it, and would definitely
recognise a screen shot. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what
this might be?
Thanks in advance,
Luke

2 that spring to mind:
Darryl the Dragon but that's pre-school stuff, only ever played a demo of
that.
The Crystal Rainforest...was a very popular educational game. I've got a
copy at home somewhere. (boxed and everything!)
I also had the Crystal Maze which was a brilliant game...but unrelated to
this thread really :)

2 Thoughts - Mapventure, a sort of geographical exploration and Plantwise
where you moved around an area examining the different wildlife in each
area. Both by Sherston, I think. Just might be able to find Plantwise
somewhere - must look.

It sounds similar to "The Crystal Rainforest" which had a Logo tutor hidden
in the puzzles. Very good for top juniors but with distinctly limited
scope! If you want the adventures without the pictures there are plenty
such available free and RComp can probably suggest graphic adventure games
to keep you occupied for many hours. ;-)

Yes, 'viewpoints' sounds very familiar, and I'm sure I remember the
kingfisher, that must be it.
Thanks to everyone who posted on this one, I'm on a bit of a nostalgia
trip and I found some Acorn websites the other day and all this
started coming back. I haven't seen that program since I was 9 or 10
years old, but for some reason it's stuck in my memory.
I don't suppose anyone has a copy of viewpoints, or knows where I can
get one from? I don't mind paying a bit for it, but I wouldn't want to
spend Ł30 on a program that I probably won't use for all that much
once I've installed it!
Cheers,
Luke
Yup, I too am pretty certain it is Viewpoints you are referring to,
Luke. My lovingly saved 1993-published copy of Acorn Education
Directory, Issue 4, describes it on page 151 as:
".... provides children with an interactive environment which they
can explore ... they can zoom in and take a closer look at the
location or wait until night falls. They are 'armed' with a camera
... These photographs may be incorporated into the Viewpoints
database....etc."
As Bill says, it was a Sherston program, in 1993 listed at RRP
£39.95 exc. VAT ! Sherston did also do Crystal Rain Forest, but
that was Logo-based with problems to be solved, whereas Viewpoints
was an interactive exploration.
Must find some time to browse the past with my Directory sometime!
