Qercus 292 is very much a Christmas issue - but should be landing on your
doormats very soon.
Happy Christmas!

Acorn always wanted you to play games on games machines and keep your Acorns
for serious stuff, so:

1. We have a review of the games machine that is different - the Nintendo
Wii - and there is a review of one of the latest games for the machine from
our (by far) youngest contributor: someone you already know well!

2. But the Micro Men suggested that Acorn wanted to move into the games area
of Clive Sinclair's computers - and vice versa. We have a review of that
too.

Our main piece appears to take a significant sideways jump into all things
Meccano. If making metal models (of whatever size) is your thing then this
new series is for you - but it will also be of interest for those preparing
technical manuals for any project in addition to showing off vector graphic
and photography tricks. We will be tackling those very difficult questions -
how do you best communicate instructions on how to do something technical -
and how do you use that experience to teach technical ideas.

As it's Christmas we have a free gift for you from FD Games. It's not a
single board game - it's three games sharing a single board. Both board and
the full rules are included in the magazine and, as with all FD Games
products, the game was designed using ArtWorks.

Root & Branch completes the story from John Carpenter but others will be
picking up the ideas in future issues.

Games Mathematical analyses the puzzle that is the Tower of Hanoi. The ideas
involved in the puzzle are so widespread that we will be returning to the
puzzle, in other forms, in a future issue. In the meantime look at the
programming ideas that are thrown up in this and previous Games Mathematical
articles. We have special prizes for contributors of such programming.

And as it's Christmas we have ideas for editing vector graphics pictures
using Draw, Vector, or ArtWorks and you can download sets of Christmas
vector graphics that you can both practice on and use as home-made
decorations for home and school.

Information on Data is part two of our database series by Nick Mason and
already we are investigating relational databases.

Just to show that the Qercus staff get out once in a while we celebrate the
anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species by offering a
review of the rather badly named film Creation.

For those who have become web-bound (and those who want to be) there is a
step by step guide to WordPress.

And as it's Christmas we have a Christmas Competition.

Take 6 takes us to the User Guide that comes updated with RISC OS 6.

So seeing as it's Christmas we include a free cut out guide to those RISC OS
6 keyboard shortcuts.

The Electronic Quill is all about you and what you have said to us - about
whatever.

And somewhere we appear to have had to shelve a couple of reviews, great
articles, a new story and much more that was intended for this issue and
which will now have to wait for the February issue out in the New Year. That
doesn't mean that we don't want more contributions, if you want to write for
Qercus then send your ideas - our offer your services - to edi...@qercus.com
and note that we are actively searching for someone to offer a regular
comment column for the magazine. Now is your chance to become famous!

Happy Christmas - and see you at the Midlands Christmas Show on Saturday 5th
December. Details in Qercus of course.

Qercus is available on subscription for £44.55 for 9 issues (UK). the rest
of Europe £53.55 and rest of world £62.55.

6 and 3 issue subscriptions are also available. Cheques payable to Finnybank
Ltd.
