SafeStore
=-=-=-=-=
SafeStore has been under development behind closed doors for quite
a while here at R-Comp, and is designed to offer RISC OS users a
21st Century solution to backup and data safety.
Most RISC OS backup programs were designed to back up to floppy
disc, when a 200Mb hard drive was considered huge. Data storage
has moved on, and with most photographs and music too large to
fit on a floppy disc at all, we need to think about different
backup methods.
SafeStore is designed to solve this in many ways. With storage
so plentiful, it can back up files automatically within your own
machine - for example on a second drive, or onto an external hard
disc. It can also back up to network drives or other computers,
whilst preserving file details (eg. date/time stamps).
You can use it to back key files up onto USB/pen drives, or
"camera" flash cards (eg. SD cards, Compact Flash etc) which
can now hold many Gbs of data.
Of course, the best backup doesn't take place within the same
computer, or even the same network, but takes place off-site,
and SafeStore can deal with that too.
Now, the biggest problem with backup is that people just don't
do it. How many times have you wished you had a more recent
copy of a file or backup, but simply didn't take one? SafeStore
is designed around the idea that people just don't get round
to taking backups. To that end, it integrates seemlessly with
your machine, and allows you to tell it which folders contain your
important data, and how often to back them up. It is designed not
to be intrusive (your computer won't suddenly slow down copying
files, if you're working on it), but to keep your files up
to date. Of course, some users will prefer to disable this,
and just trigger a backup as and when they want, and it'll
do that easily too.
Unfortunately the release version isn't quite ready for the
show, but you'll be able to come and see it on the R-Comp stand.
SafeStore is designed for RiscPC and higher systems, including
Iyonixes and A9s. It is particularly well suited to RISCubes
and RISCBooks because of the large variety of backup mediums
compatible with these systems.
