Non-Marching Squares at boot

I have a new symptom on a 3b1 I've not seen before. A power on (and any
press of the reset button), the video blit burst appears followed by a
single square. That is all you get. I did try disconnecting the hard
drive and I get marching squares, so I'm wondering if I may just need to
find the floppies and do a manual fsck or possibly do a reinstall.

I thought the FAQ documented what each of the squares represented. I also
seem to remember that if it got stuck on one square it may be due to the
video RAM not passing testing.
