Vista speech recognition works for me EXCEPT if I repeat a word or
short phrase it jumps back to the first time I used it; often it jumps
to bringing up a set of numbered choices; basically, I NEVER issue
commands (other than "open parentheses" etc) yet it keeps interpreting
what I say as a "go to" type of command.
Many thanks

Some possible causes and cures:
1. A headset microphone element positioned in front of the mouth can
pick up inhales and exhales as words or commands. Position the
microphone element to the corner of your mouth about one half to one
inch and redo the microphone setup.
2. A microphone with poor noise canceling characteristics can pick up
background noises and interpret them as commands. Try creating a
Windows sound recorder recording as found at this link:
http://www.emicrophones.com/faq_answer.asp?contentID=77
Make a short eight or 10 second recording and when playing it back see
if you can hear any background noise.
Finally, try doing some additional training. Right click on the Speech
Bar's microphone, go to configuration and select "Improve voice
recognition."

This group is currently almost vacant. I would also ask in one of
the big Vista groups like...
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
Just keep "speech recognition" in your subject line. It appears to
be a well discussed topic there.
By the way. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is probably still the best
speech recognition available. It's a solid program, and it works. If
your voice is good enough for Vista, I'm sure it's good enough for
Naturally Speaking.
Good luck and have fun.
