NETHACK: error in free_obj

Hello,
My Nethack V.3.1 crashes with error in free_obj(). This seems to happen only
in levels above 28. I'm working (or playing in this case) on a Sun 2 with
SUN - OS 4.1.2. Are there any ideas to avoid this bug?

I've played through the complete nethack 3.1.3 on my Sparc running 4.1.3
and on another system running Solaris 2.2 (and now 2.3) and never ever had
this problem.
