Nethack 3.1 gives 'illegal instruction' on HP 9000/7xx systems, when using X11, and core dumps on a PC running Dell Unix.

Anyone else experienced similar problems ?

i haven't had this problem on an hp 9000/730 with hp-ux 8.07. i haven't
played long games, but i ran a few short games to check it out
and it seemed to be working fine.

is your problem an immediate illegal instruction, or is it after playing
a while?

(not an official response).

I got the same problem. It dumps the core immediately. The non-graphic
version runs all right for me.

Same thing for me, dumps core immediately, no error messages at all.
And, yes the tty-version works just fine.

Have you followed the instruktions in src/NetHack31/win/X11/Install.X11.
I had some minor problems which dissapeared when I followed the instructions.

Can't say what happened, I didn't have a problem, I crunched it up on
HP9000/7** running HPUX8.07 and HP9000/[34]** running BSD4.3reno

I had the same problem until I loaded the Xresources from NetHack.ad.
Then it all worked fine.

If you need more info, let me know.

Nethack 3.1 has been 'testing our systems' ( ;-> ) quite heavily since it
appeared. We're running it on HP 9000/720's with HPUX 8.09 and HP 700RX
X-terminals. It has always worked fine, except when it gets confused about
which font to use in the top window, when it sometimes collapses the
dungeon as a result of not being able to split the word 'Nethack' at the
start of the game :-)
I suggest the original poster tries xdb - the program debugs quite well
under this.

Same here on a Decstation 5000 with Ultrix 4.2a. With X11, it won't even start,
I get a /usr/users/local/bin/nethack: 1133 Memory fault. The tty version works
fine.

Nethack 3.1 bugs (Amiga):

The HackWB trashes options/etc settings it you try to change them from
there. Use WB's Information window instead.

Nethack corrupts the free memory list on occasion. Probably write out
of bounds or write to freed mem. (I'll try it under mungwall and see if I can
catch it).

Occasional crashes while quiting or saving (while it's writing the
icon for the save file).

We have a network here; we'd like to have shared bones/high-scores.
This appears to be hard to do because of the way the levels are stored and
the way assigns are used. It should be easy, Unix nethack does this.

Hm, I'm running it on the same station without problems. Both versions
(X11 and tty) work fine, tty is the default.
Are you sure to have the config flags right ?

When showing the "tombstone" screen, it gets 2 mungwall hits: in both
bases it wrote past the end of a 960 byte allocation. In each hit, it
wrote "00000000 003b" right after the allocation and starting 16 bytes after
the allocation. This is in addition to trashing the free list (C:Avail scans
the lists, and throws a mem list corrupt alert).
