Hello everyone,

In our company we want to introduce a software to handle
bugs reported from our costumers or our quality department.
The software has to run under NT (and Win95) and on a Novell
Network. We want to see which bugs are reported, which are
fixed and who works on the bug. 10 - 20 people will be
involved with this software.
The only software we know until now, is PVCS Tracker from
Intersolv. So the question is, do you know Tracker or any
other software of this kind and what are your experiences?

Greetings from Nuernberg/Germany

Markus,

We're pretty happy with DCS (Defect Control System) from Software Edge.
It's still a Windows 3.1 app, but runs just fine under Win95 and Netware.
It's pretty full featured, very customizable, and generally easy to use. I
find the searches a little slow, however.

It's the only Windows system I've used (besides custom solutions), so I
can't compare it to anything else. You can contact them at:

The Software Edge Inc.

Telephone: (719) 598-3713
Fax: (719) 598-3970
BBS: (719) 531-7924 (8/N/1)

I don't know if they have an Internet site or address.

Markus,
This might be overkill, but have you looked at automated test
tools? Most of them have various modules that are used for
different purposes during testing - my experience has
been with SQA Team Test. The module you could use is called
SQA Manager. Although it links with SQA Robot, which is the
actual testing tool, Manager can be used as stand alone.

The great thing about Manager is that it guides you into
a methodolgy that I have found to be excellent. You can
enter, track, and close bug reports, produce custom reports
(if you have access to Paradox, you can tap into SQA's
registry directly!), even set up rules so that bug reports
would be automatically sent by (MAPI-style) e-mail to the proper
person(s).

Good luck

Hi,
we have been using PVCS Tracker for six months now and are completely
happy with it. We created two different databases, one for defect reports
and one for change requests. This product is very flexible. The only
disadvantage is that it does not support a certain workflow model for the
reports. If this is an issue, then it is woth looking at SQA Manager.
This tool, which is part of SQA Suite, a client/server test tool, allows
to define a workflow, but does not have a facility to make certain fields
in the reports mandatory (which is, in turn, possible with PVCS Tracker).
Nichts ist perfekt auf diesem miesen kleinen Planeten!

Very interesting! Would SQA-Manager work with (interface with)
VisualTest? The mapi-send feature would be quite useful to me as that
would interface directly with our Mail client product... hmmmmm.

Paradox only ?

I don't know why you would want to use SQA with VisualTest-seems
to me to be a duplication of tools.

SQA's repository (database, if you will . . .) is an actual
Paradox DB. I have been able to use Paradox to access the actual
tables that SQA uses, in the native format, to generate highly
cutomized reports that I'm unable to do in SQA, although SQA has
extensive reporting features, and includes a report writer (that
to me is severely limited).

DCS no longer exists. It is now what Markus knows as "PVCS Tracker".
Intersolv bought it out a year or so back.

Look at TRACK from Soffront. I thought it was more flexible and
customizable than DCS/PVCS TRACKER. Recently came out with an SQL
Server support as well.

Our Company is releasing a Web based bug tracker early next month. I will
post the URL prior to release for demonstration purposes. Betas of this
system have been used with great success and accolades for better than 18
months!

This is an excerpt from the SE FAQ:
Subject: Configuration management and problem tracking tools
Date: 8 Apr 1995

This FAQ used to contain information on configuration management and problem
tracking tools. With the advent of newsgroup comp.software.config-mgmt, it's
more appropriate to go looking in its FAQs (available using the World-Wide Web
via URL http://www.iac.honeywell.com/Pub/Tech/CM/).

Hope this helps.
