Most of the online novels that I have seen can be downloaded via the web
or an FTP program. I suspect that what you need is a program to be able
to read the novels and that would depend on the format of the particular
novel. If there is some particular site or book that you're having
problems with, tell us what it is and the URL to locate it and maybe
someone here can help you with it.

There are many web sites that make books available in plain text and/or
HTML versions, and there are also PDF versions available that can be
viewed using a free reader from Adobe.

An excellent place to start looking for books is
<http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/links/books.html>, a page of links to sites
that have books available.

Just for your future information, it is considered more polite to delete
(snip) parts of the message that you are not responding to (but keep the
attribution lines, where it tells who wrote what) and then put your
response at the bottom of the message or better yet, interlaced, as I am
doing here.

I see from your headers that you are using Outlook Express on Windows.
You can use Internet Explorer to access web sites and download novels on
the web. I don't use Windows or IE, so I'm not absolutely sure of the
process, but I think you should be able to use File | Save As... to save
a web page to your hard drive, or maybe you right-click (my Mac doesn't
have a right click...) to get a contextual menu that allows you to save
the file or page to your hard drive. I believe that if the novel is in
the form of a downloadable file, IE will probably handle that for you
automatically.

Try going to <http://www.baen.com/library/>. This page has links to
programs you can use to read novels, and also has links to novels you
can download for free in various formats. If you download in HTML,
you'll be able to read the downloaded file using your favorite web
browser. Click on the link labeled "Reader Software" for brief
explanations of the various programs and platforms for reading novels.
Click on the link "The Books" for a listing by titles of books available
for free from this site. Click on "The Authors" for a listing by
authors. (All of these are science fiction, BTW; go to other sites for
other types of novels.)

see <http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/> for a great number of novels
available in text or HTML versions.

I have been assuming that you wanted books you could *read.* If you
want to listen to books, there are also a large number of books
available in audio format f for pay or some for free, in MP3 format and
in similar formats. If you have an iPod, go to the iTune Music Store
and click on the link for Audiobooks. There is a large selection of
complete and abridged books you can buy to listen to. For other
listening devices, try www.audio.com

Try http://www.gutenberg.org/ Project Gutenberg is a service that prints
books that have expired copyrights (i,e, more than fifty years after the
authors death) and you don't need a special program to download them as you
can view them as both text files (you can use notepad or WordPad or any text
editor you like) to view them and most can be downloaded either by doing a
File Save As in your web browser or download them as compressed Zip files.
To unzip the file (and get to the book) when using the zip file option
you'll need an unzipper. See http://www.winzip.com for one of many such
tools.
