wxListBox: First selection causes two events (wxGTK)

I am using wxGTK-2.8.12 and notice that the first selection of a
wxListBox causes the selection of item 0, then the "real" item. I
searched the archives and noticed that is is a known issue. Has there
been any progress in fixing this. (The workaround for preselecting
item 0 would not be feasible for my application which needs the
initial state to be completely unselected).
