Just saved an output file with SPSS17 and it seems SPSS continues the
saga of compatibility issues with outputs from previous versions.
What's the deal here ? How can I possibly view my "old" output files
with this 17th version ?
Why is this ? Wasn't the SPO format adequate enough ?
A very annoyed customer

First, on your installation cd is a Viewer that can read the old spo
format.
Second, starting in v16, the new spv format was introduced. There
were a lot of reasons for ths - the old format really wasn't adequate
and was based on very Microsoft technology (Microsoft compound
document architecture). It had been stretched for 15 years. The new
format is portable across all supported platforms. Unfortunately, it
was not practical to engineer 16 or 17 to read the old spo format.
One of the problems with the spo format was that it was very version
specific. The new format is not. Going forward, apart from new
object types that might be introduced, the format will be much more
compatible between versions.
We're sorry for the inconvenience due to changing the format, but it
will be better for everyone in the long run.

Thanx a lot for the comprehensive answer.
We'll get used to it....

Login to the SPSS Technical Support website (login: guest, password:
guest). Then click on Utilities on the left side, and follow the
obvious path to the "Legacy Viewer".

My collegues who use SPSS always grit their teeth when we talk about
upgrading, and this is a sad example of why they do so.
Upgrading should be a nice experience, and surprise features like the
NEWER / BETTER spo format should be proudly proclaimed.
That way we know, IN ADVANCE, to get our legacy viewers installed and
ready for a migration period.
Is this the tool?
