data window variable view label column

SPSS 17.0 on windows xp ... with some data files, the label column in
variable view resizes itself every time a command is run from the
syntax window. it resizes to so narrow one cannot read the contents
and to expand the column back to where it was, the window resets
itself back to the very top of the variable view window. Is there
anyway to force the width of the label column in variable view to
remain a fixed width??
