SPSS Offers First CD-ROM Product;
Combines powerful data analysis tool with demographic data
CHICAGO - May 16, 1996 - Packaging its award-winning product with census
information from two of the leading data providers in the United States,
leading statistical software supplier SPSS Inc. (Nasdaq: SPSS) today
announced the availability of its latest release SPSS 7.0 for Windows on
CD-ROM.
This marks the first CD-ROM ever distributed by the company. It is being
offered at the same price as the previously released SPSS 7.0 on diskette.
The CD-ROM version includes:
* The Base module for SPSS 7.0 for Windows;
* Census information from Wessex, Inc., and Claritas Inc.;
* The complete SPSS 7.0 Base System Syntax Reference Guide in an electronic
format. The 500+ page reference manual was previously only available in
hard copy format (at a cost of $38);
* A multimedia Quick Tour that shows an overview of the features of the
new product;
* An electronic version of the recently published SPSS Survey Tips, a
30-page booklet that helps readers design, conduct and analyze surveys; and
* Selected articles from the SPSS user magazine, Keywords.
"We are excited about the potential for greater value for our customers using
the CD-ROM medium," said Jack Noonan, SPSS president and chief executive
officer. "We took advantage of the increased storage space on CD-ROMs to
offer added value products, such as our reference guide in electronic format.
In addition, we are teaming with two of the leading providers of census
database information to give our customers valuable census data at no extra
cost."
Wessex, Inc., is providing more than 200 MB of published data from the most
recent (1990) United States short-form census. The data are already in SPSS
data format and include linking variables to all leading desktop mapping
packages. Users will be able to easily analyze more than 1,000 variables
delivered at the state, county, city and census tract level for the entire
United States. According to Wessex, the retail price for this data converted
into SPSS data format would be in excess of $10,000.
Using the Wessex data, users will be able to answer questions such as:
* What is the density of Hispanic teenage girls by neighborhood or across
the country?
* In which sections of Los Angeles will you find the most two-parent
households with 5- to 10-year-old children? What are the racial
composition and educational attainment of those areas?
* Where in the United States are the highest concentrations of 30- to-45-
year-olds working in the Health Services industry? How do your sales
territories mesh with these areas?
In addition, Claritas Inc., is providing four partial data sets for the
CD-ROM. Each file includes data for all 50 states and the District of
Columbia. Those sets include:
* Household Trend database - The Household Trend database combines data
from the 1980 Census, the 1990 Census and Claritas' Update, an annual
estimate of current year and 5-year projections. The partial data file
includes variables on population, households, families, housing units,
group quarters population, household size and various income levels.
* Consumer CLOUT database - The Consumer CLOUT file provides average
household expenditures for 24 selected retail categories. This
expenditure information represents the average amount of money spent
on purchases, by consumers, for personal use only. Claritas offers
CLOUT data for more than 400 specific product categories and retail
store types. The model incorporates Claritas demographics as well as
data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey and the Census of Retail Trade,
both conducted by the US Department of Commerce.
* Workplace Population - A unique data set from Claritas, considered to
be one of the only databases to accurately estimate the entire U.S.
working population. The partial data set estimates include the total
number of persons working in private sector employment, public sector
employment and the number of persons working at home. Workplace population
estimates are invaluable for choosing the right business locations, from
bank branches and retail stores to restaurants.
* PRIZM Distribution - PRIZM classifies every neighborhood in the U.S. into
one of 62 clusters based on similar demographic characteristics. Each
cluster contains a descriptive name, such as "Kids and Cul-de-sacs,"
"Latino America," or "Gray Power." PRIZM helps target neighborhoods with
similar consumer behavior patterns. The PRIZM files provide current
population and household estimates for each of the 62 clusters in each
state. The file also includes total population and household counts so
users can easily calculate the percentage for each cluster.
SPSS 7.0 was released late last year. Noonan believes that the product is
a new paradigm in data analysis. "Users will be able to see their data in
ways never before possible," Noonan said. "SPSS 7.0 changes the way people
analyze their data and present the results."
The product includes a true Windows 95 interface with floating windows and
toolbars, and context-sensitive help including "What's This?" pop-up
explanations, definitions and rules of thumb for statistical terms. The
online help also offers direct links to the tutorial for more in-depth
looks at certain program operations -- especially useful, for example, when
trying a complex new feature for the first time.
SPSS 7.0 also provides quick access to commonly performed operations
through toolbars and the right mouse-button. In addition, the product boasts
full implementation of OLE 2.0 (Object Linking and Embedding) technology.
This technology helps users easily move the analytical results from SPSS
into other applications, such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to incorporate
SPSS tables into final reports and presentations. Also, users can activate
and edit those tables direct from the word processing or presentation
software simply with a few clicks of a mouse. SPSS 7.0 is the fourth release
of the company's award-winning Windows product, and the first version
specifically designed to take full advantage of Windows 95. The product
also runs under Windows NT 3.51.

RE: SPSS 7.0 released on CD-ROM
Can we site license folks expect the usual 3-4 month (or
longer) delay before getting our hands on this new version?
I just received the 3.5" security version of 7.0 about 2 weeks
ago (as discussed in a previous thread). When I made my last
request for it - I was told the CD release date was still
uncertain.
