I use SPSS 6.1.2 for Windows and I'm trying to run the LISREL syntax given
for Example 3.1 in 'LISREL 7: A Guide to the Program and Applications'.
But, when I use this:
LISREL
/DA NI=4 NO=126
/LA
ORIGPRT1 WRITCOPY CARBCOPY ORIGPRT2
/CM
25.0704
12.4363 28.2021
11.7257 9.2281 22.7390
20.7510 11.9732 12.0692 21.8707
/MO NX=4 NK=1 LX=FR PH=ST
/LK
ESAYABIL
/OU SE ND=2.
the result is:
[Header stuff omitted]
THE FOLLOWING LISREL CONTROL LINES HAVE BEEN READ :
DA NI=4 NO=126
LA
ORIGPRT1 WRITCOPY CARBCOPY ORIGPRT2
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : OR is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : WR is not a valid parameter name.
CM
25.0704
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 25 is not a valid parameter name.
12.4363 28.2021
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 12 is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 28 is not a valid parameter name.
11.7257 9.2281 22.7390
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 11 is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 9. is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 22 is not a valid parameter name.
20.7510 11.9732 12.0692 21.8707
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 20 is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 11 is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 12 is not a valid parameter name.
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : 21 is not a valid parameter name.
MO NX=4 NK=1 LX=FR PH=ST
LK
ESAYABIL
S_Y_N_T_A_X E_R_R_O_R : ES is not a valid parameter name.
F_A_T_A_L E_R_R_O_R : MO line missing or out of order
If I then try changing the position of the slashes in the syntax, and try
this:
LISREL/
DA NI=4 NO=126/
LA
ORIGPRT1 WRITCOPY CARBCOPY ORIGPRT2/
CM
25.0704
12.4363 28.2021
11.7257 9.2281 22.7390
20.7510 11.9732 12.0692 21.8707/
MO NX=4 NK=1 LX=FR PH=ST/
LK
ESAYABIL/
OU SE ND=2.
this is what results:
[Header stuff omitted]
THE FOLLOWING LISREL CONTROL LINES HAVE BEEN READ :
DA NI=4 NO=126
C
F_A_T_A_L E_R_R_O_R : C; is not a valid line name.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?
Help very much appreciated

SPSS translates what you write into LISREL syntax, and then passes it to
LISREL. At the start of the LISREL blurb LISREL puts what SPSS told it - if
you look at this you can often sort out the source of the problem, by
comparing it with what yu wanted to write in LISREL syntax . (This is the
header stuff you have deleted). Alteratively you need the SPSS manual for
the LISREL module, which tells you thwe details.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, you need some more /'s. On the line
after /LA, in front of ORIGPRT1 WRITCOPY CARBCOPY ORIGPRT2, on the line
after /LK, in front of ESAYABIL, and possibly after the /CM line (but I am
not sure about that one.)
SPSS said (if my memory serves correct) at the last ASSESS (the independent
UK-based SPSS User Group) Conference** that LISREL 8 would be included in
the next major release of SPSS, (SPSS 7) and it would have input through
menus and dialog boxes and stuff. (Can anyone from SPSS confirm this?)
Until then, IMHO, you are better off with the stand alone LISREL.
**(PLUG: next one coming up in November 1995, York, UK. contact me for
more details - or join the assess-news mailing list, by sending the one line
message join assess-news Your1stname Yourlastname to mail...@mailbase.ac.uk).
Cheers,

As for LISREL 8, all I can say at this time is that we want to
continue making structural equation and path modeling
capabilities available under Windows. In order to deliver these
capabilities to our customers as quickly as possible, we are
investigating several product and development strategies. I
cannot give any availability dates until these investigations
are completed and a development strategy is adopted.
Hope this helps.
