A prof. in our Dept. has recently upgraded his SPSS/PC+ software
to version 5.0.2. He has been using ver. 4.x and has had no
problems with any analysis. However, since upgrading, when
running JOIN he gets an "not enough memory" error. I have
checked into the config, etc., and with 8MB RAM, using DOS
HIGH he has 506k free memory. I'm not familiar enough with
SPSS to know why he is getting the memory error. I did bump
his memory up to 590k (which should be more than enough to
load most programs) and he still gets the same error.
Any ideas??? Any help will be appreciated.

There are two versions of SPSS/PC+ 5.0.2; one that supports
extended memory and one that is limited to 640K. The JOIN
command in the extended version works fine. However in the 640k
version there is a problem that generates an out of memory
message. If there is 8MB of memory on the machine, you should
definitely consider using the extended memory version. We
created the 640K version really only for customers who just
simply did not have the computing resources to run the extended
version (a minimum 2MB machine). In the meantime you can get
around this problem by starting SPSS/PC+ with a memory switch
as in:
SPSSPC /s=100
This sets the workspace to 100k and will allow the JOIN command
to execute properly.
Good luck.
