Rhyming nick-names, apparently.

Jeering??? Where do you get this impression from? Please
explain.

Robert signed his posting with the name "Bob", which is a common
nick-name for "Robert", based upon medieval rhyming slang.
"Robert" shortened to "Rob" was rhymed with "hob" and "nob" and
eventually with "bob".

There are number of names in English in which the longer form
is often only used for legal purposes and people prefer to be called
by the shorter form of the name. For example, my name "Walter":
it is commonly shortened to "Walt" or "Wally" (not for me, though,
I use the full name.) Similarily, people with the name "William"
more commonly go by the name "Bill" or "Will" or "Willy".

Thus, Bruno was merely answering your question "what is bob" --
"bob" is a personal name that people with the official name "Robert"
often use.
