Might be a minor point but I have to know. I always thought it is MATLAB. But I
just looked at the title of Etter's book and saw it written as Matlab. Now,
this would not have happened without some thought. So next time I write about
"MATLAB" what is it gonna be?.

It is MATLAB.

Both Etter texts that I have ("Introduction to MATLAB For Engineers and
Scientists" and "Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB") have "MATLAB"
all uppercase in the title. When we typeset the name, we make "ATLAB" a
bit smaller (reduced by about 10%) than the "M". Some other folks reduce
it a bit more, which may make it appear to be proper case (initial cap) at
a quick glance.

As Steve said, it should be all uppercase.

Thanks for asking.

Well as I understood it, it is MATLAB(R) with the ATLAB slightly smaller and the
(R) as a superscript.

You are describing "small caps"; i.e. small caps version of "Matlab" with M
capitalized would look as you have said. But, it is still Matlab.

Actually, Jim is describing something more like "medium caps". With
"small caps" the height of the small caps should be about the same as the
height of the short lower-case letters (such as 'x') which is normally
about 2/3 the height of the capitals. Jim said that the "ATLAB" is set at
about 90% of the size of the "M" which makes is closer to "normal caps"
than "small caps". If The MathWorks says it's "MATLAB" then it's
"MATLAB".

Different packages handle the "small caps" font style differently,
sometimes making it less than half the height of a normal uppercase letter.
So we explicitly capitalize and reduce by about 10%.

But I'm nitpicking here. Ignoring this typography stuff, it's "MATLAB",
all uppercase.
