Hello MATLAB friends
I have MATLAB students version, and unlike the commercial version, it
requires that I have the actual MATLAB CD inserted in the CD-rom
drive when I launch MATLAB.

Since I use MATLAB frequently every day, I am afraid that my original
MATLAB cd will be worn out through sliding it in and out of the cd
slot on my Apple Powerbook, and ultimately be unreadable to the
computer. It already shows quite a few signs of use.

The obvious solution is to make a copy of the CD, but I tried to do
that using the build-in disc utility tool in Panther, but it does not
work. I get an error message, and I suppose the original MATLAB CD
has some kind of copy-protection. How can I avoid having to buy a new
copy of MATLAB when my original CD eventually wears out?

Kind regards, Søren
Denmark

I'm in the same position. I've no idea what MathWorks has done to the
CD, and I don't think they'll tell you how to copy it since they're
afraid you'll pirate the CD. This one instance where anti-piracy
measures harm the paying consumers more than people buying pirated
software. But that's beside the point.

One thing I've found out, is that the MATLAB CD is only needed when
starting the program. So what I do, is start-up Matlab with the CD in
the drive, then remove the CD and store it somewhere safe. I don't
really need to shutdown MATLAB because I don't do any other CPU
intensive task. When I don't use MATLAB, I just minimize it to the
dock.

Its not a real solution, but at least, it lets me use the CD drive
when I'm working with MATLAB, and my CD is kept in a safe place. I'm
not sure how legal this is, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

Wee Jin

Wee Jin,

I recommend contacting customer service and explain your situation. I
believe that if you send in your worn out CD they may be able to send you a
replacement (with a minimal shipping and handling fee).
