I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a crack at opening a file for me. One of our instruments creates these files and we currently have to use the software that comes with the machine to export the data into a .dat file. This is tedious process that I would love to be able to do in MATLAB, but I do not have the slightest idea of where to start.

I don't know how I would get the file, ~45 mb, to you. Is it kosher to toss it up on the file exchange?

Ultimately I would like to be able to sort through the worksheets within the file and access the data in a few of them, the rest are junk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a rather large file from which to try to reverse engineer a file
format (I'm assuming it's not in any of the standard formats supported by a
function in MATLAB.)

http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/supported-file-formats.html

My second suggestion (after checking the table on that documentation page)
would be to ask the instrument manufacturer if they have a specification for
the format of the files or even better a standalone converter to convert
that file into one of the formats that MATLAB "knows" how to read. If they
have a standalone converter, use it; if they give you a file format, you can
use some of the low-level file I/O functions to write a reader function.

http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/low-level-file-i-o.html

If that's not possible, my third suggestion would be to post a SMALL file in
that format to some file hosting site like dropbox and post a link to the
file here.
