Both machines have the Intel graphics chip set, and no I'm not going to
screw around loading different graphics drivers, everything else works
meaning all of the other software I have. The older 4.x series works fine on
the same hardware. Scilab should work out of the box with what ever graphics
system is in the machine.
The silly message that pops up saying to type "help use canvas" does nothing
more than generates a pop-up help box when you try it. The contents
displayed has nothing to do with "canvas". In fact if you try a search on
"canvas" nothing is found.

They switched to OpenGL with Scilab 5.x, which is where the problem comes
from. If it really puts your knickers in a twist you can try ScicosLab.
I did, ultimately decided that I liked the new features of 5.x better
than what was lost (although I'd still like to see some things fixed),
and came back to Scilab.
Getting proficient with scilab requires a siginificant effort and its not
worth it if there are major problems that are not being addressed, at least
from the end user's point of view.
I'm floored that a recommendation, that pops up in the console, and you
can't even find it in the help system is not building confidence in the
robustness of the software.
I like scilab as well however the developers do need to hear that some
outstanding problems need to be addressed. I think the graphics issue is
something more effort needed to be expended on to find a solution.
