A fresh release for Mathematica 8 is live.
It works across versions 6 to 8 and
package upgrade is recommended for all.

"Reserve several machine hours for installation (e.g., overnight)."

You really have to be kidding.

What, exactly, is the purpose of the "bootstrap" step that creates the
.mx file (which allegedly takes hours)?

In particular, does this irreversibley alter the originally installed
Mathematica system files? Or alter them in any way?

What is the purpose of the first step in the QuickStart.nb? That is:

Put[ToFileName[{$HomeDirectory}, ".DsUAutoloadPreventionStub"]];

(Maybe it's just me, but I find the documentation about installing
DesignerUnits unusually confusing when compared to nearly every other
add-pn package I've ever used.)

Well Bobby, it "worked for me", and perhaps completed sooner than expected! (I went to sleep after launching it.)

A quick glance at this package's web pages showed them to be sophisticated, comprehensive, and convenient---a good mix. The "backgrounder" page has a directness that is almost poetic.

Haven't used it yet, so we'll see how it plays out.

I've been using Jon McLoone's AutomaticUnits package since he announced it in early December.

It works very well for me and it's written by a Wolfram employee, so I'm

The web pages are comprehensive if, for instance, you don't need a list of
available units... unless it's there, but well hidden?

Ah. If I get so far as installing it overnight, all will be revealed.

Thanks,

Bobby

Right. The on-line documentation would benefit by including a snap of the
notebook I mentioned.

I've downloaded the Automatic Units package, but have forgotten
how properly to install it. Do I first have to unzip the files? In
what directory should they be installed? I'm using Windows 7
Professional 64-bit and Mathematica 8. Thanks.

Best,
Harvey

Download it and open up the zip file (my browser settings make this an
option at download time). Select All, and then left-click drag to the
directory found by:

$UserAddOnsDirectory

put it in the Applications directory under this. You may have to create
this, I am not sure.

I use Mac OS,\ so I can't help you with Windows, but for me it was simply a matter of unzipping the file and placing it in the /Users/MyAccount/Library/Mathematica/Applications folder.

Yes

Really, anywhere you like. The most convenient place would be in
one of the directories in $Path. For myself, I have installed
this package in the directory returned by

ToFileName[$UserBaseDirectory, "Applications"]
