Hi,

I would like to know how to create subscript box in notebook
by only keyboard without clicking palettes by mouse.

Subscript is often used when writing textbook,
so I tired with clicking palettes again and again ...

Thank you.

Hi,

a) there is an extensive online help how to create 2d input
b) Subscript[x,n] is created with
"x" Ctrl-Key and Underscore "_" "n"

Regards
Jens

Sorry, I found the shortcut Ctrl+_ for subscript box
from the menu [Edit]-[Expression Input].

If you want Subscript[x,y], enter x Ctrl-_ y.

Chihiro,

To enter x with a subscript i just type: x Ctrl _ i Ctrl space. Where _ is
the underscore character above the minus sign on the keyboard. Ctrl space
moves you out of the subscript box, or you can use the arrow key ->.

There are many other box structures that are entered with the Ctrl
character. For example powers can be entered by, for example, x Ctrl ^ 2
Ctrl space. Check out section 1.1.7 in The Book, although I notice they
don't mention subscripts there.

You can also look up SubscriptBox in the Help browser.

If you do a lot with subscripts and run into problems you may want to check
out the SubscriptSymbols package on MathSource at the WRI site.

With Mathematica 5.0 running on MacOS 10.3.5 I do this using cntrol-shift-minus. That is the control key, shift key and key just right of the 0 key at the same time. This generates a subscript box into which you can type a subscript. Exiting the subscript box is done with contol-shift-space.

I believe the same keystrokes can be used to achieve the same effect with versions 3.0 and later of Mathematica (I didn't test this). I don't know if the keystrokes to do this vary between platforms.
