1. What is Khoros
Khoros is software for data processing, data visualization, and
software development. As a complete software environment, Khoros
lets you work more efficiently than any combination of end-user
applications. Khoros includes a visual simulation and programming
language environment, a suite of software development tools, an
interactive user interface editor, an interactive image display package
and an extensive collection of image processing, data manipulation,
scientific visualization, geometry, and matrix operators.
Through Khoros, a wide variety of users can perform a range of
tasks, from information processing to prototyping and simulation to
specialized application development. Applications and tools developed
in Khoros are easily ported between architectures.

3. What is the difference between Khoros 2.1 Pro and Advanced Khoros 2.1?
Khoros 2.1, released July 8, 1996, is available for purchase in the
form of Khoros 2.1 Pro on CD-ROM with documentation, or as Advanced Khoros
in source form without documentation via FTP. Khoros Pro is the commercial
product, which will have upgrades of highly tested new features. Advanced
Khoros is the rapidly changing R&D product, which will add fixes and
features through frequently occurring patches and packs, but without
the quality assurance of Khoros Pro. The Advanced Khoros pack available
via FTP as of August 23, 1996, for example, adds a prototype of the MPI
toolbox.
Khoros 2.1 Pro
Khoros 2.1 Pro, a commercial package consisting of binaries for 5
supported platforms and source code on CD-ROM and documentation, can be
purchased directly from KRI. A single-user license is associated with
this product and site licenses are also available.
Khoros 2.1 Pro contains:

Advanced Khoros
Advanced Khoros 2.1, source code only version without documentation,
and considered KRI's R&D version of the Khoros software is available
via FTP. Documentation is available for purchase from KRI.
This release of Khoros marks a split in development tracks at KRI. In the
future, Khoros Pro will remain a commercial quality version, while
Advanced Khoros will contain the latest and greatest features. Khoros Pro
will be released on about an annual basis, while Advanced Khoros will
be released as frequently as every three months in source form only.
Advanced Khoros will be considered R&D level software with source
available via FTP. Khoros Pro will remain commercial off-the-shelf
software available on CD-ROM.

4. What is in Pack 1 of the Advanced Khoros 2.1 release?
Pack 1 to Khoros 2.1 contains a number of bug fixes and enhancements
to the July 8 Khoros 2.1 release. Highlights of Pack 1 include
better support for HP and IBM, improved structure support in data
objects, over a dozen bug fixes to Cantata, as well as miscellaneous
enhancements and bugfixes to:
- kbugreport, kbuild, kconfigure, kconfigure,
kgenmake, kgenmanual, and kversion
- guise, preview, xvregister
- visualization services
- envision apps editcmap, editimage, extractor, spectrum, xprism
- support utilities kcksum, kcrsum, klint, kpack and kunpack
- geometry routines gimpfacet, gquadmesh, and rendermonster
For those with Khoros 2.1 already installed, Pack 1 is available
separately; ftp to ftp.khoral.com and:

The README.K2_1p1_22Aug1996 describes how to install Pack 1,
K2_1p1_22Aug1996.tgz is the pack itself, and ReleaseNotesK2.1p1
is a complete listing of the bug fixes and enhancements of Pack 1.
In addition, there is also a pack 1 available for the SAMPLEDATA
toolbox; this contains an updated version of the GeometryTexture
workspace and improved wording for the RGB Images pane. Ftp to

Pack 2 to Advanced Khoros 2.1 contains a number of bug fixes and
enhancements to the Aug 22 Khoros 2.1 Pack 1 release. Highlights of
Pack 2 include longer command line support, improved support for shared
memory and memory mapped transports, KHOROS_LOG file support in
cantata, line width control for cantata connection via application
defaults (see the file design/objects/xvroutine/cantata/app-defaults/
cantata), new 3D contour attributes XVW_PLOT3D_NUM_CONTOUR_LEVELS and
XVW_PLOT3D_CONTOUR_LEVELS (see example envision/examples/plot/09.contour
_images), as well as miscellaneous enhancements and bugfixes to or that
affected:
- kdarwin, kgendepend, kgenindex, kstats
- visualization services
- cantata, composer, craftsman, guise, preview, xvregister, xvrun
- envision apps animate, editimage, putdata, xprism
- support utilities kdbmedit

KRI provides extended professional services available on an hourly
or long-term basis.
Engineering support offers assistance with programming, toolbox
creation, and other specialized application needs.
Technical Support provides one-on-one assistance with installation,
compilation and running of Khoros.

KRI also sponsors and manages the interactive newsgroups for the
collaboration of Khoros users. There are two ways to get questions
answered and to interact with other Khoros users: The Khoros mailing
list and the Khoros USENET group. The Khoros mailing list and USENET
group are bi-directionally gatewayed to each other (all messages are
cross posted). That way you only need to participate on either the
mailing list or the USENET group.
To be added to, or removed from, the Khoros Mailing List, send e-mail to

USENET group, subscribe to comp.soft-sys.khoros.
Khoral Research also provides a digestifed version of the Khoros
