AVL application using Java/ESRI

Forgive the newbie question, but...
Can anyone shed some light on how long (or how much effort) it might
take to develop a typical AVL web-based application using Java &
ESRI's ArcGIS server?
I'm very new to GIS, and right now, all I'm looking for is an estimate
based on previous such projects, from the experienced folks in this
group.

Depends on the project. Anywhere from 1 hour to 1000 hours.
You may want to reask with more deatils as what you are trying to do and
what funcitons your app will have.
You may also have better luck at www.esri.com as this group doesnt see alot
of action.
