I am looking for a World Map shapefile with a principal meridian centered
over the United States and Asia split on the east and west sides of the map.
I would like the file to be in geographic coordinates and have the country
outlines. I have searched several places on the internet and have been
unable to locate this type of file.

If anybody knows where I might find a shapefile like this, please respond by
email.

Thanks,
David

Google is your friend! "world shapefile" returns many links to free
datasets, including

I have tried using this data set as well as the world set that came with
ArcView, when you re-project it to place -98 longitude as the central
meridian the countries do not remain as closed objects and the graphics no
longer work. I am looking for a data set with the US in the center of the
map.

You can use the Plate carre projection in ArcGIS and select any center you
want by tweaking the map projection properties. the projection-on-the-fly
should shift your shapefile.

I have tried this is ArcView GIS v3, but the appearance of the shapefile
does not change regardless of what Meridian I use. Am I doing something
wrong, are there more steps to follow?

cant do it very well in 3.x. i havent used it as its very old technology.
9.x is the way to go and for sure you can do it there. I use it to draw
paths that cross the North Pacific ocean and i center the map around 165W.
Works great. Cant give you much advice on 3.x. try the forums and tech
support at www.esri.com.

However am not sure what you mean by a shapefile thats centered on the US.
Typically its the map or the data frame that is shifted and not the data
layers themseleves. You could try to shift the shapefiles yourself but that
would require maybe some coding or other utility.
