Microsoft products have been consistently subprime and superficial. Their
first product, Basic, full of frivolous features, was always deprived of the
matrix and other math features of the original Dartmouth Basic. Their SQL
lacks many of the complex features found on mainframes. Their spreadsheets
store data so sloppily other programs can't tell text from numbers. Their
word processors could have used markup to save space from the beginning as
Wordperfect always had. Their installation programs hog up your disk space.
Their browsers promote frivolous complexity that no machine can ever catch up
with, hence producing consistently subprime results. Ultimately their
monopoly power hails from all the government agencies that require
submissions in Microsoft format. Meanwhile, their only competitor, Unix,
seems stuck in a communist Star Trek world where users have to perform cult
rituals and other perversities. America wasn't like that. Standards used to
be backwards compatible and robust. The Japanese changed that: As early as
1982, while Americans used a fan out of five, the Japanese only allowed one
peripheral to operate on a serial port. Japanese quality is up-front quality
because in Japan you not only lost your face, but your head; American quality
had to be broken in, but lasted longer. Real American cars, the maligned
clunkers with V8 engines, have always lasted for decades; It was those with
imported parts to satisfy the hippy nature freaks that broke down.
