I wanted to find out what ports (if any) my ISP is blocking.
I used the service on www.grc.com to check my port's status - the
surprising result was that ALL ports came out 'stealth' - each and
every one!

I am connected via ADSL and am not using any firewall, etc'.

Any suggestions or advice will be most welcome

That's a decidedly bad idea.

However, it seems to me that either your modem or your
router (if you have one) is acting as a NAT filetering
box and a rudimentary "firewall".

I am using an internal ADSL modem provided by my ISP, so I assume it's
very basic and un-sophisticated. How can I check if it is indeed
acting as a filter?

The whole point of the exercise was to find out if my ISP was blocking
ports used by my file-sharing software - could my modem be the
problem?

Well, I assume you had your file sharing software open while
you did this. Remember, don't download anything illegal.

If you're using an internal (i.e., pci-card) modem, you may
have software to configure it. If not, I can't think of
anything to do for you.
