Anyone know of a way to grant one's self admin rights on a computer for
which one is a "user"? Running windows XP

Only a "user" with admin rights can change user rights.

Assuming that you are talking about LOCAL admin of your PC; while a
administator is looged in, use "user account" inside control panel to
select account and change rights.
