Hello all,
I'm running ssh 1.2.20 between an IRIX 5.3 system and a Linux
2.0.30 box, using the secure
connection to do mirroring between the two (using rsync 1.6.2). My
problem is this: I'm getting
occasional insecure connections (Message :
Secure connection to <HOST2> refused; reverting to insecure method.
Using rsh. WARNING: Connection will not be encrypted.
). Naturally, I tuned the logging up to 'fascist', and checked the
error logs every time this
happened. Unfortunately, all that appears in the logs is an entry from
rshd, saying that a connection
has been established (duh!).
Usually, when this happens in a particular xterm, that xterm will
be 'cursed' for all eternity and I
have to open up a new one if I want to connect securely. ie - that
xterm won't connect securely,
period. Sometimes this happens on the first xterm I open for the day,
sometimes it doesn't happen
at all, and sometimes it will happen on some other (seemingly random)
term. There doesn't seem to
be any correlation between the number of existing connections, number of
users, or anything else I
can see. I _will_ say this, though; it works beautifully most of the
time, and the fact that it defaults
back to rsh at least gives me a connection to work with, albeit an
insecure one.
I was wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this, and
if so, what you did to correct
the situation. Also, if someone could simply explain what the devil's
going on, it will allow a rather
confused sysadmin to return to peaceful slumber at night. :)
Thanx in advance for any help,
Brian Gerard
