This problem just started today, but it's perplexing me. Whenever I click
the Open button to establish a connection, PuTTY crashes, and Windows gives
me the Error Reporting screen. I've tried this with two different hosts,
and with SSH and Telnet. This is on my laptop running Windows XP Pro. My
desktop running XP Pro still works just fine. Any thoughts?

More details, please? In particular, what version of PuTTY are you
using? Does the same problem occur with the latest development
snapshots? What settings are you using? What precisely is the error
you get when PuTTY crashes?

I've tried the latest stable and the latest development snapshots. I've
tried using it with Wifi card plugged in, without, with USB network card in,
and after formatting and reinstalling Windows twice. Every time, after I
try to open it, I get the message "putty.exe has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Standard Windows app
crash error report system.

That's a very strange error. I've not used XP much so I'll have to
believe you're right and it does produce such useless error messages.

Unless you can work out a way to make it produce a useful error
message, I'm not sure I can help you.

I got it fixed; I was trying to fix a strange error that was happening with
my browser as well, so I tried to go to Trend Micro's web site to do a virus
scan (what the hell, eh?) Anyway, the scan wouldn't run because the app had
"expired." The message said it expired sometime in the year 2011. So, I
check my date/time settings, and I find that apparently I've travelled into
the future some 14000 odd years. Guess PuTTY doesn't think it'll be useful
140 centuries from now :)

Ah, this is a known Y2038 bug, on our wishlist at:

We hope to fix it at some point in the next 34 years.
