So in PuTTY Configuration I set Connection -> SSH -> Remote command to "cat filename.ext" and enable logging.

Per the log file PuTTY receives a bunch of SSH2_MSG_CHANNEL_DATA packets (as I'd expect) but it also sends a lot of SSH2_MSG_CHANNEL_DATA packets (which surprises me). eg.

Incoming packet #0x3a, type 94 / 0x5e (SSH2_MSG_CHANNEL_DATA)

My question is... why?

It looks like some of the incoming SSH2_MSG_CHANNEL_DATA logs have the word PuTTY repeated over and over in them, as well, towards the end:

I download the file via SFTP and the string PuTTY does not occur in it. Yet I do "cat filename.ext" even via PuTTY's interactive shell and the last few blocks of the file contain the string PuTTY a bazillion times. Then it seems that the shell (not PuTTY but the shell) just hangs until I do Ctrl + C.

Any ideas?
