TrueCrypt has an excellent reputation, though I haven't used it
myself. Whether it is suited to your problem is something you
will need to decide.

Thank you for your response. I was trying to encrypt a folder I have
on my desktop but so far I cannot figure out if that can be done.
Because of out-of-town guests, I have not had a lot of time to work
with it. Can that be done?
Thanks,

I suspect that you have to setup an encrypted container, then mount
that container on the folder. Maybe first mount the container
somewhere else and move everything in the folder to the container.
Thank you.
