i got a linksys 4port router.
i got dhcp off, and I opened port 20 for my computer, and enabled the
ftp port 21 on the router as well.
I can ftp on DOS to the site I want to change directories and all, but
when I try to get something, or just do a 'ls' it doesn't accept it.

what should i try to do?

I am not trying to be a smart mouth.

What you said above makes some kind of sense.

The rest of what you have said makes no sense to me.

You don't have to disable DHCP to do anything with FTP.

At best you should be using one the router's static IP's and port
forwarding. And the Linksys Knowledge Base tells you how to do that.

Are you using IIS?

You shouldn't have to do a thing to the cable/dsl router. Most of them these
days allow for FTP in the firmware so any secondary connections will punch
their way right through. If I am correct in assuming when you stated
"opened port 20 for my computer" that you in fact mean you also have a
firewall then I would say open the firewall to allow incoming connections
and you may have some success. No harm done since you have a router in front
of it anyway and you can always change things back after downloading.
Otherwise you don't have a second NAT translation going on behind a
firewall, do you?

Some FTP sites disable commands such as "ls" for a variety of reasons. Do
you experience the problem at other FTP sites? Try the LinkSys site.

ftp://ftp.linksys.com

Anonymous access allowed and "ls" is allowed.
