I have been offered a hardware Firewall at a very good price, but I am
unfamiliar with it. It's a Linux based one called IPCop.

I plan to use it on a home adsl setup consisting of three machines. Has
anyone come across this firewall? Anything I should know before making a
descision?

Thanks,

Jon

Yes, you should know that IPCOP is not a hardware firewall. It is free
opensource software and anyone charging you for it is ripping you off. Visit
www.ipcop.org download the ISO image and chuck it on an old PC. It is
sooooooooo easy to install and use.

Its an excellent firewall which I use on some client sites and on my home
DSL line. Highly recommended.

Well Mike, while I agree about the fact that IPCop is easy to use
and good (I use it too) the fact that someone is charging on a f/w
may just mean that they charge on the hardware, all in all reading
the post it seems to me that someone just installed the IPCop on
some hw "blackbox" and is selling such a blackbox, the charge
at this point may just be related to the H/W and the "pre-config"
and (maybe) support, nothing more and it's not unusual afaict

Yes it's excellent I use it a lot, and it's quite common to charge for the
hardware (mini-itx is good), the installation, setup and support.

You can't charge for IPCop itself as it's GPL.

Make sure it's 1.3.0 and it's patched.

You can find more info here http://www.ipcop.org

Absoloutly, the point I was trying to make (Badly) was that the IPCOP
software is free and the customer should be made aware of that fact. Knowing
this information makes it easier to determine wether the deal being offered
is good or not. Just need to do the sums like:- estimated cost of low spec
PC + free software + installation time = expected buy price.

Just to clear up a minor point, you can definitely charge for GPL'd
software. You just have to include the source code with your
distribution and you cannot forbid anyone from making changes to the
software or from giving it away for free.

Fun,

Thank you all for your comments. I should make clear that the version that
I have been offerd is sat on a small (about 5 inches wide) box made by a
company called Lex. As the price is so good I would guess that I'm just
being charged for this box. However as I have spare machines I may just
take the software and put it on one of those.

Thanks again for all your thoughts.

I went to the ipcop web site and the download page. The download file
extension is .iso. How do I run the install. Clicking on this file starts up
my Roxio Easy CD Creator program.

?? Somebody better tell RedHat about this...

You can charge any price you want for GPL'd software. You just can't
stop the person you sell it to from redistributing it as he pleases
(and you have to provide the source at no additional cost, either with
the distribution or on request).

Everyone else is correct about how easy IPCop is to install.
After hearing so much about it here I decided to try it. Very easy and
straightforward. Had it installed and up and running in about 30 min.
It is really FAST. We also have an ISA server on the network and it is much
faster than that. (Although the ISA server is doing other things so not
really a fair comparison, but IPCop is running on a Pentium 100, with 32Meg
RAM so maybe it is fair :)
Anyway, I had the machine publicly exposed for about 15 min before someone
starts pounding on it and trying to get in.

Right, and before starting the installation, maybe you'd better
read some more about the installation process and the h/w
compatibility list, just take some time to read them here:

http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/IPCopHCLv01

http://www.ipcop.org/1.3.0/en/install/html/

and btw the master documentation page

http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/IPCopDocumentationv01

if possible I suggest you to download the pdf documents and
print them, a printed manual is handy when performing the install
for the very first time, since it may help you and speed up the
whole setup... in a word ... RTFM :-)

Heh, IPCop is much less demanding than ISA, and imo it may be a good
solution for branch offices (protection, VPN), just pick one of those small
"all in a box" computers, setup IPCop on them and you're up and running
and setting up a VPN is a breeze too

Well, the fact that you were alerted about the pounding means
that the IPCop is working as needed :-) also, the IDS (snort) is a
nice plus

I do exactly the same. I was trying to make the distinctiontion and amplify
the fact that IPCOP (the software) should not be charged for.

Thats right. ISO is a CD image. Just burn a CD from the image file (Don't
copy the file to a cd though!) You can then boot from the CD if your system
supports it or make a Boot floppy using the tools on the CD

I wonder if picking something like (e.g.)

http://www.digitaltechinc.com/single_board_pc_s.html

and adding IPCop may work well ... ;-)
