I completely agree with David C. Troup; I have been waiting subconsciously
for this group for at least a year now. Thanks the the net gods that it
is here.

Now, in response to your queries, I don't know much about robot
navigation, as I am mainly interested in force control and robots in
manufacturing. However, if you are looking for a mobile robot that you
can get fairly cheap, I may have a contact for you. There is a grad
student in our department who builds his own robots, and has made a form
of a mobile robot called a "Robocycle." I can contact him for you to
see if he is willing to make one for you, or sell you one that he has
already made. I don't really know the quality of this product, or how
much he would want for it, but I thought I would mention it to you, and
if you are interested, we can pursue the issue.

I have several requests:

I'm looking for papers that deal with robot navigation and perception.
I'm primarily interested in 'Occupational grids' or 'certainty grids'
types of approaches. I am also looking for people to develop contacts
with in the robotics research field.

I'm looking for a cheap robot, that uses the polaroid range sensors
for perception. An arm is NOT needed. Basicly, I'm looking for a HERO
2000 robot.

And I'd like to say welcome to all of you out there! I've been waiting
for a group like this for some time now.

ps. Any new news on the NavLab at CMU?
