Hi All,

If anyone else in this group is like me, you went nuts the first time you
saw BattleBots on TV. I turned to the GF and said "I've gotta do that!". She
thought it was a kool thing and was very encouraging. Since I am in no
postion to spend thousands of dollars on a 200 pound mechanical death beast,
I thought I'd eventually get around to finding a club or something that had
robotic combat for regular people with robots made out of locally available
hobby stuff and maybe some light hardware. I finally got around to looking
and all I see is Sumo. Robot Sumo is not for me.

I found the Dangerous Machines site and read about the "Ant Weight" class
they came up with and I can't say that turns me on either. Two Futaba
S3003s, an RC receiver and the necessary battery could weigh more than the
class allows, AND the thing can't exceed 4 inches in any dimension. I would
love to find a competition with a weight/size class comparible to Sumo (20cm
and 3kg), but where damage is allowed with reasonable restrictions (No
fluids, glue, string, high voltage, Etc). Anyone know of such a thing?

The only one I know of is the one you ought to start up.
I dont think it would take long to find other people with similar criteria.
Battling Bots is still in its infancy but the more it becomes public the sooner
it will grow, the sooner innovation will favour it.
I know some of the guys have been doing it for a very long time in their own
way but what I want to know is why did they keep it quiet for so long ;-)
Play Nice...................

Greetings Fixitsan,
As I have said before, you rock. I was thinking of making two bots and get a
buddy to come with me to the local park (it has an area where people have RC
racing and stuff) and have some fights in public. I'm sure some of the RC
people would show some interest.

Thanks Again For Your Encouragement!!

I couldn't imagine a gf being genuinely encouraging. Shes prolly just
trying to get you out of her hair so she can go to the bars!!!!

anyones.)

Zowie...

Believe it or not, some "GF's" are interested in technology. My fiancé has
a 4 year degree in EE and she is very interested in working with me on
robots.

I agree that this is possibly rare. I feel very fortunate to have met her.
But, still, she wasn't the only female in her class (well, maybe she was...
I don't know what the others looked like - but I know she has class.)

It's a dream come true...

Oh, I don't know... One of the contestants on BattleBots said,
"Chicks really dig this. Especially German chicks." :-)

I remember seeing some guys recently with a miniature robot wars
effort going on but they were just focusing on Mindstorms bots
as I recall... they had a basic arena and the objective was just
for one bot to push another out of the arena. I saw this locally
(in Silicon Valley) while visiting a company. They had a video
tape (private effort, not the company) and I failed to ask
whether they had any organized efforts or whether it was
just a few guys getting together for such things. I would imagine
that it would be very easy to set up local mini-bot-wars events
and that lots of people would participate. I also have interest
in such things, but haven't had the time to really delve
into the possibilities. I would be interested in meeting with
anyone in the SF Bay Area (Silicon Valley) who might want
to try to ramp up such a thing "semi-officially" for here...
who knows ? :)

SOme people by now have already built a bot that is out of the weight or size
class restrictions of 3KG and 20cm but I bet a lot of them would like to add an
outer shell and a weapon and have some fun. Raising the weight limit and size
by 50% would give most designers room to breathe and the freedom to use older
components, despite their weight.
4.5KG and 35cm would make any type of drive and weapon combination
viable........

Nah, I'm serious. My GF likes it when I do technical stuff. She sits and
does my contact logs during ham radio contests too. She learned morse code
just so she could do that. Does she dig me or what?

Why not start your own?

Hi,

This made me laugh, I just decided that mini-sumo was a bit too small for my
latest design. The 3kg class gives me soo much room, I'm not sure how to fill
it all. I guess it's all relative :)
