I am looking into our next generation servers and network. Today we run 2
Compaq Win-NT 4, 256&512 RAM, about 170 GB Raid-5 and ColorCentral OPI. I am
"a little" tired of servers that needs rebooting almost every week. And when
we upgraded to NT 4, we had 2 weeks of tough work before we had all device
drivers and patches to make the system run.
- So, I wonder: If one wants a really reliable system that will run well, and
will be able to handle future SQL & e-commerse system, do you have to turn to
UNIX and pay 3 - 6 times more, and thus get rock-solid systems ??
Or, will you encounter almost the same problems ?

We run a DEC Unix box on a Alpha with Helios and like you said-it's rock
solid-until you have to change soemthing and then all hell breaks loose.
Getting all this stuff to work together can get real messy.

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a server that works?
My friends all use unix, no servers with burps
My servers work half-time, a truckload of quirks
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a server that works?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me some new admin clowns?
The current ones cause me deep ungainly frowns
Prove that you love me and put them all down
Oh Lord, won't you buy me some new admin clowns?
Oh Lord, won't you buy them a beginner's course?
I'd like to stop cursing before I'm all hoarse
They need to Get It, if need be by force,
Oh Lord, won't you buy them a beginner's course?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a server that works?
My friends all use unix, no servers with burps
These WinNT servers are a truckload of quirks
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a server that works?
Ditch NT. Nothing Microsoft makes makes works very well.

First advice, take the Color Central off the server and put it on it's
own box.
Second advice, some pretty large servers on the internet use Freebsd,
it's free.
Third, know what you need to serve. If you have to be all things to all
clients, you have a tough order with setting up any server. If you can
weed out some of the older machines, or at least update their OS, you
can make your life a bit easier.
Fourth, come to grips with your budget. If you don't have big bucks, it
does no good to window shop in the high rent district. If you go with
Sun or SGI plan to pay more and don't gripe about it, that's just the
way it is.
Fifth, split up your workgroups, get accounting off the image server.
Move programs that don't need to be there onto other computers.
Sixth, start an r&d project. I wouldn't put any money down on anything
over 5,000 dollars that I couldn't get in on evaluation. Intell h/w is
getting better and better.
Seventh, avoid tricky technology. Buy the standard stuff that most
people are using. Things like netdoubler and copy doubler should make it
onto the trash heap.
Eighth. Don't take advice from people in this newsgroup. I have good
evidence that many are taking drugs and some work for your competitor
and have a vested interest in making your server crash. There's evidence
to support that some of these posts are not coming from this planet.

So how much is 260 days uptime, 6MB/sec raw network throughput and no
corrupt or missing files in over two years worth to you? To me its
worth a lot more than 6 times!
We run 4 different flavors of Unix plus a Linux box. Linux and
Unixware run on Intel chips. The others are Sun and SGI. All 5
machines together don't give me the problems of any one of our NT
servers.
And I don't buy the bit about NT being easier either. Figured out the
registry yet? How about trust domains and roving profiles? Makes DNS
and NIS look simple.
Do yourself a favor and try a cheap demonstartion system. Get and old
486/66 with about 32MB of RAM, a good CD and a 2GB Hard Drive. Spend
US$50 on Red Hat Linux 5.1. Once you get it up and running, download
the latest version of Samba and Netatalk from the Red Hat site in rpm
format. Samba is a Windows NT compatible server; Netatalk does the
same for Mac's. After a day or so, when you're really happy with the
way Linux smokes the NT file server on antiquated hardware, add more
disk space.

Hey, like, what are you trying to say man. Drugs, us. You gotta be
kidding.

Well, OK then. As long as you're only disparaging the advice of the
_people_ in the group.

The Bill says this type of information may threaten our NT business and
thus slow our pre-invasion activities. LittleBlue13's post is clear
evidence that his conditioning is slipping. Suggest a visit from Marvin
may be in order.
TRANSMISSION ENDS.
Heehee. This post's a keeper.
