I currently have a LAN setup with FTP software's PCTCP software.
I want to add a windows for workgroups. (Have them work together.)
How can I get them to cooperate?

You are missing some important information here such as: Type of LAN,
What TSR's are loaded, What version of DOS, Memory manager, etc.

I can relate my experience and hopefully this will help. I was trying to
do the same (PC/TCP & WFW 3.11) with a Banyan network, using the built-in
setup from WFW for networking. The PC in question had a CDROM. Even using
QEMM and DOS 6.2 I could not free up enough memory to get everything to
work. The problem came from the fact that FTP's TCP/IP DOS TSR is so
large. And the TSR had to be loaded before starting WFW. I worked on this
for several days coming close to solving the problem but never quite
getting there. I gave up and installed windows 3.1. Once Microsoft's FREE
TCP/IP stack and utilities became available I loaded them and solved the
problem. We are now moving to WFW as our standard with the Microsoft
stack.

I have installed OnNet PC/TCP 1.1 which uses the VXD. As far as I remember
you are recommended to install the WfW (NETBEUI?) network first, then you
load OnNet, layering it on top of the same drivers. So you should be able
to do what you want. I have no direct experience of the older PC/TCP.
Hope this helps.

Depending on the applications you require it may well be best to sell PCTCP
to someone else, install the microsoft tcp/ip stack (free on
ftp.microsoft.com) and a few other tools like netscape, winqvt/net. If
PC/TCP is truely winsockapi client you may well be able run the pc/tcp apps
on the microsoft winsock client.

If you are using NFS its also a good chance to consider switching to SMB
(Lan manager) over TCP/IP for PC clients and using SAMBA as a free unix
server

If you have PC/TCP 2.3, this is possible. If you have PC/TCP 3.0 (or
OnNet 1.1) it pretty easy and documented in the "Managing PC/TCP"
book in the online documentaion.

In both cases, the instructions are lengthy, so I am not going to
post them here. They are available from our anonymous FTP server,
BBS, and Web server, on which Support maintains an extensive
collection of technical documents and answers to frequently asked
questions. You can also get a copy by putting in a request to the

If I may say so :
Yes, the Microsoft WIN32 stack works fine (I used it for quite some time)
but if you want speed and consistency the On Net 1.1 or 1.2 products (and
some other stacks as well) are superior in almost every way. This is
especially true if you have more than 12 or more users in your workgroup.

I recently saw an entry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
that covers this stack specifically. The MSKB can be

Maybe I dont have the right answer for you.
But Im using TCP/IP-32 for WfW 3.11 with 3 PCs an 1 UNIX-Workstation without
any problems.
You can get it from ftp.microsoft.com:/Softlib/mslfiles/wfwt32.exe

There exist an older version 1.0a at the same location (wfwtcp.exe)

I don't think you tried long enough. I used FTP's pctcp 2.05 -
3.10, and I never had problems, even when Banyan came along.

I load all of the vines drivers high, DOS goes high, and as
much as possible of ETHDRV and IDRIVE go high. I'm left with
596+k of memory, and WFW/Windows 3.1 go just fine. You might
want to try ON-NET from FTP as this uses VXD's to supply the
stack to windows.

Don.
