What software do I need for PPP or SLIP on MS-DOS?

I have an old PC/XT that I would like to use for a PPP or SLIP connection
to the Internet. All I really need to do is connect to my provider and be
able to telnet to another machine. Preferably, the software should fit on
a 720K floppy with MS-DOS (I have a very barebones system, without a hard
drive). Basically, a dumb terminal connected to the Internet.

What software do I need to do this, and where do I FTP it?

Thank you in advance.

Have a look at ./msdos/offline/slip_itj.zip on SimTel. This is a suite of
Dos applications (nntp,smtp,pop3,ftp, simple telnet, "YARN"
offlinereader), a tcp/ip stack ("WATTCP") and Tattam's slipdriver
"(c)slipper".

Do what I did. Lose the SLIP/PPP link and get a text based link. Then all
you need is terminal software....

Use Win 3.1 to handle the PPP... or you can always get one of the two
packet driver TSRs for DOS and programs like DOSLynx.

No, or Yes, you need some terminal software, MS-Kermit!!, for dialin..
And then, quit Kermit, load cslipper and have a slip-connection.
I use cslipper 1.5 (many people still use 1.3(???)), the faboulous
tn3270.exe of Clarcson Edu (CUTCP/CUTE), imho the bestworking tool for
everything, with buildin backgroud ftpserver, that lets you connect to
everything, makes download easy(much faster than kermit:)). Other usefull
stuff: check the WATTCP dirs. get apps.zip, get the ftp.exe (excellent),
a lot of nslookup etc stuff...ping pong, traceroute is called trout.exe..
and, if you like, Trumpet IRC and Trumpet News for Dos. All very cool
stuff, much cooler than all this Mac or Windoze crab. Btw, there is
a nice webbrowser in the new Minuet (minuet.micro.umn.edu). Slip_it was
to complicated for me, but seems to be VERY powerfull. News with killfile
etc, if you like this kind of features:)) Anyway: check all the binaries
that you find in the WATTCP dirs and beware: wattcp thingies NEED the
(c)sliper in ETHERNET emulating mode!!!!! Btw: get termin.com, to
unload the driver in one mode and reload it in another. If you are lazy
and start with tn3270.exe, that shows some more infos in slipmode: there
is a nice ping and nice traceroute in the ncsatelnet from Port Elisabeth.
Works in slipmode too, but is a little bit bigger than the corresponding
wattcp apps. Hope this helps. No PPP-experience and my Toshiba has the DOS in
the rom...Etherppp has a build in dialer(WHY!!?????!!!) and is complicated.
And needs 120K Ram...:))) Dialinscripts with kermit are easy, just play with
the hayes.scr....copy and paste etc...:))

What do you need PPP or SLIP for ? Just use any terminal prog
out there ( I recommend Kermit ). Dial in, log on and telnet
from your shell account.

Kermit or Slipper & NSCA telnet, at an archie near you.

If you are going to go the terminal program route, then I would recomend
Q-modem or Telix. I wouldn't use kermit unless forced (ie. at gun-point)
:)

Just my 2-cents,

Alas, some providers do -not- provide shell accounts. I live in the
hinterlands of Wisconsin and the -only- local provider has -only- PPP
accounts. I ways almost angery enough to become my own provider of
internet access here.
